Upcoming Changes to Newly Admitted Attorney Format Restrictions for Skills CLE Credit & End of Temporary Nontraditional Format Approvals on January 1, 2026

The New York State Continuing Legal Education Board reminds Newly Admitted Attorneys that:

Beginning on January 1, 2026, newly admitted attorneys must once again complete their transitional Skills CLE credits in either the traditional live classroom setting or by fully interactive videoconference (a/k/a videoconference for newly admitted attorneys or “VCN”) – group participation only where all participants (faculty and attendees) are physically together in group settings.

The VCN format’s two distinguishing features include:

(1) it must be fully interactive (every attendee and faculty member in every location can see and hear every attendee and faculty member in any location who asks or answers a question during the program); and

    (2) all participants (attendees and faculty members) must be physically together in group settings (no one can dial in/log in alone).  Every attendee must be physically together in a group setting with at least one other attendee or faculty member.  Every faculty member must be physically together in a group setting with at least one attendee.

For more information, please see the CLE Format Requirements for Newly Admitted Attorneys, Section 2(C) of the New York State CLE Board Regulations & Guidelines and the format definitions in Section D of the New York CLE Certificate of Attendance Information & Instructions
