The Civil Rights and Transparency Clinic Staff Attorney will aid in the supervision of second- and third-year law students working on client matters in a clinic focused on civil rights, civil liberties, and government transparency. This position offers attorneys with an interest in civil rights and non-discrimination law the opportunity to engage in a multifaceted clinical practice that works in support of improving the lives of people who have experienced discrimination based on a protected class, including, but not limited to, their gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, race, national origin, etc.
The Staff Attorney will have primary responsibility for providing legal support to people who have experienced discrimination in various aspects of their life, including:
- Transgender rights;
- Discrimination involving gender or gender expression;
- Employment discrimination;
- Pregnancy discrimination;
- Unequal pay and wage theft;
- Fair housing cases involving sexual harassment; and
- Gender-related protections like familiar status discrimination for women with children.
While providing legal support to clients, the Staff Attorney’s duties will also include: assisting, planning clinic seminar classes; and conducting outreach in Western New York and surrounding regions in order to build the clinic’s docket. The Staff Attorney will be primarily responsible for covering their matters during the inter-semester break, with assistance from law student interns.
The Staff Attorney will be integrated into the Clinical Legal Education program and will be welcome to participate in the vibrant intellectual life of the School of Law, including workshops, academic conferences, and other events. Support will be provided in preparation to continue their career at public interest organizations, private law firms, in-house positions, or other settings.
This is a part-time research foundation position for 2022-2023 with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2022, and anticipated end date of May 15, 2023. This position can be combined with other public or private practice employment (subject to conflict checks). This position is not currently renewable, but the clinic is working to create sustainable funding in the future for staff attorney positions. The position will receive benefits. The Staff Attorney will be joining a clinical program whose mission is to deliver access to justice while teaching UB law students to be excellent, ethical, and engaged lawyers.
