Description: The work involves giving legal advice and counsel to administrative employees of the Department of Social Services. Working under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Department of Social Services—Office of Counsel, the incumbent participates in various legal actions for the Department. The incumbent is responsible for performing professional legal work with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment.

Qualifications: Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution, One (1) year of experience in one or more of the following areas: child abuse/neglect law, child support enforcement, domestic relations law, family law, public interest or poverty law, elder law, welfare fraud law, or criminal prosecution. Note: Substitution: Completion of 24 semester credit hours in any combination of the above fields may substitute for the required one year of experience.

Possession of a practice order from the NYS Supreme Court Appellate Division, Fourth Department.

Admission to the NYS Bar is required within one year. Upon admission to the bar, the appointee shall be granted the Grade XV position, Attorney-Social Services.

The incumbent will provide legal counsel to Erie County Office of Child Support Enforcement, Child Protective Services, and/or Children’s Services.

Salary Range: Starting salary for external candidates: $83,959. (Non-Negotiable)
