Human Rights & Federal Practice Committees’ Joint Meeting
The joint meeting of the Human Rights Committee and the Federal Practice Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 12:15PM via Zoom.
Fair Housing: A Legal Primer and Update in Buffalo and the Nation
Honoring Fair Housing Month
Scott Gehl, former executive director of Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) and Heather R. Abraham, Associate Professor of Law at University at Buffalo School of Law and Director of the Civil Rights & Transparency Clinic, discuss local and national fair housing issues.
Program Summary: Fifty-three years ago, the government passed the Fair Housing Act. A federal act to prohibit private housing discrimination was one of the most difficult battles in the Civil Rights Movement of the Twentieth Century. Housing discrimination and residential segregation have proven to be some of the most persistent and visible forms of racism, and the battle for open, fair, accessible, and affordable housing continues. We will hear from two panelists who specialize in fair housing: Scott Gehl, the former executive director of Buffalo-based Housing Opportunities Made Equal, and Professor Heather Abraham, director of the Civil Rights and Transparency Clinic.
